Sounds over 85 dBa can damage your hearing faster. A hearing test can be done by an audiologist or an ENT. Sounds at 85 dBA can lead to hearing loss if you listen to them for more than 8 hours at a time. It should be noted at this point that there is another decibel scale in use, called the sound pressure level, based on the ratio of the pressure amplitude to a reference pressure. For every 3 dBAs over 85dBA, the permissible exposure time before possible damage can occur is cut in half. Regularly being around noise that is more than 85 decibels can cause hearing loss. For example, a 56.0 dB sound is twice as intense as a 53.0 dB sound, a 97.0 dB sound is half as intense as a 100 dB sound, and so on. In equation form, intensity I is I=\frac\\ is given (and not the actual intensities), this result is true for any intensities that differ by a factor of two. Power is the rate at which energy is transferred by the wave. Intensity is defined to be the power per unit area carried by a wave. The relevant physical quantity is sound intensity, a concept that is valid for all sounds whether or not they are in the audible range. High noise exposure is hazardous to hearing, and it is common for musicians to have hearing losses that are sufficiently severe that they interfere with the musicians’ abilities to perform. Thats why sounds high up the decibel scale (from about 85200dB) are a major cause for concern: the sound waves carry so much energy that they will damage your hearing, sooner or later. A sound of 100dB is actually 1,000,000,000 times more intense than a sound of 10dB and not 10 times as intense, as you might suppose. We are all very familiar with the loudness of sounds and aware that they are related to how energetically the source is vibrating. But when a passing motorist has his stereo turned up, you cannot even hear what the person next to you in your car is saying. After settling into bed, you may hear your blood pulsing through your ears. In a quiet forest, you can sometimes hear a single leaf fall to the ground. If the sound goes up to 88 dBA, it is safe to listen to those same sounds for 4 hours. Once you get up past 115dB, there’s no safe amount of time to. For every 3 decibels over 85dB, safe exposure time gets cut in half so it’s 8 hours at 85dB, but only 4 hours at 88dB, and so on. For example, you can listen to sounds at 85 dBA for up to 8 hours. dangerous decibel levels, exposure time also makes a difference in developing a risk for noise-induced hearing loss.
